[Character Name] (Andre) (de) Courfeyrac
[Canon] Les Miserables novel (basically he has a bigger role and is close friends with Marius and has some really nice moments with the other amis there but if you've only seen the movie, close enough. He's played by Fra Fee there, so in the film he's the adorable curly haired tiny boy in red)
[Point Taken from Canon] Post his death at the barricades
[Age] 24-25ish.
[Gender] Male
[Sexual Orientation] Bisexual
[Eye Color] blue
[Hair Color] blonde
[Height] 6'2
[Other] He's a giant. Well he's quite broad and tall and generally pretty large, which, with his personality, tend to make him appear larger than he already is. He's great to snuggle with, or on. He is French and has a bit of a provencal accent, seeing as he comes from the southern areas of France.
[Clothing] Courfeyrac is from the 1830's in Paris and a wealthy family. Of course he's going to be well dressed. He takes particular pride in his clothing and appearance and his favorite item of clothing is the hat. He is forever buying hats, which manage to be lost, destroyed or given away at odd times, and he may very well appear in different hats, or at least with different touches on a hat at different times. He also loves cravats and can do several different knots. He's not afraid to wear bold colors or waistcoats, but unlike some of his friends, he knows how to wear them correctly.
[Background]
Courfeyrac is a supporting character in Hugo's Les Miserables, information for his setting can be found here: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables)
In terms of Courfeyrac's specific history, he was born in an aristocratic family, hence the participle that usually comes before his name, though he does not now use it. Courfeyrac grew up with the monied lifestyle of being bourgeois, with many servants, nurses, and caretakers, but spent very little time with his parents.
As their last child, he was something of a surprise baby for his mother, who never made a secret of the fact she did not much want to bother with him, and he was mostly left to his nurses to raise. His older sisters were more concerned with their social duties than their baby brother, and he did not know them well, as most of them were married or preparing to be married shortly not long after he was walking. As their only son, Courfeyrac grew up acutely aware that he had not been a wanted child, something his father made clear with every disappointment the boy brought him.
While his parents were not exactly physically abusive, and their money made sure that their son wanted for nothing, Courfeyrac's mother was disinterested, and his father was more interested in having his son grow up to inherit the de Courfeyrac name, something that his son put in jeopardy with every one of the stunts he grew up pulling. The trouble was that if he was quiet and stayed out of the way, as they wanted, it became torture for a child as emotional, and sensitive as he was.
Courfeyrac's parents mostly ignored him, but if he caused chaos, at least his father paid enough attention to yell at him. While he didn't like being yelled at, exactly, or the way his father slammed things around, at least it was attention of a sort and better than nothing. As a result of this, he grew up to become something of a troublemaker, with a reputation for being bold and thumbing his nose at most social standards of the day. It was FUN if nothing else.
It was this that lead Courfeyrac to the study of politics at school, where he threw himself into learning everything he could, and discovered Georges Danton as a personal hero. When he was ready to be sent to Paris to continue his education at the law school, Courfeyrac knew that he was, for the most part, done with his family, aside the fact they sent him an allowance to stay away from them, for the most part, and, having long been horrified by the way the bourgeois and upper classes had treated the poor, dropped the participle, the sign of aristocracy from his name (as de Anton became Danton) proceeded to dip his toe further into political action, met Enjolras, and the other members of what would become les amis de l'ABC (when pronounced the french way, those letters sound like "abased", or poor), and fell in with the group and its fight for freedom. Always friendly and open, he had a talent for seeking out new members and figuring out who would fit in well with the his friends
Along the way, he met and rescued Marius Pontmercy, bringing him home when he had nowhere to stay, lending him clothes and introducing him to the members of the ABC, participated in the July Rebellion of 1830, and was killed during the June rebellion of 1832, in the fight for France's freedom and equality for all people.
[Personality]
Canon:
In terms of canon, Courfeyrac is a friendly, outgoing young man with a strong social conscience, as evidenced by his involvement in Les Amis de l'ABC, a group dedicated to social justice, and to bringing a revolution to France. Hugo tells us that he is the "center" of the ground and brings warmth and radiance to it, embodying a youthful enthusiasm and warm friendship for his brothers in arms.
Courfeyrac is also demonstrated as being very caring and kind to his friends. He adopts Marius Pontmercy when he learns that he has nowhere to go, brings him home and lends him clothing, tries to lend him money, and helps him find translation work. Later, when Marius needs a place to stay again, and comes "to sleep with you", Courfeyrac is happy to give his friend a mattress.
Courfeyrac is rich, and officially bears the name of "de" Courfeyrac, indicating his family's aristocratic status. He has rejected this status and disassociated himself from his parents, preferring to live in student quarters, and then in the revolutionary sections of Paris later on, to be close to the action of the revolution itself. He is dedicated, friendly, and loyal, with a strong heart and a definite love for women, and for his fellow men. He is described as a 'paladin' by Hugo, indicating that he has a strong heart and morals and works to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
Headcanon:
In terms of my headcanons for Courfeyrac, he is extremely close to his friends and loves to take care of people. He is partly this way after a childhood of being mostly ignored by his parents. He's developed a need for stimulation and attention from his friends at most points in time, and can be excessive when it comes to displaying physical affection, and is a bit overwhelming. He often needs to be reminded of what personal space is.
One of Courfeyrac's best traits is his need to have someone or something to love at all times. He is in the habit of bringing new members to meet the other amis and often adopts these new members as his own special "pets" for a while after the fact. He genuinely loves to watch bright or potentially bright people flourish and helping them to do so, and doesn't tend to care about spending his own money to make his friends happy if he needs to do so. He's been known to resort to things like hiding money in the rooms or clothing of a poorer friend , but always does this in a way that will not cause them to lose respect. He can be particularly dramatic and demonstrative, and has a hard time resting when he sees injustices performed, especially against women, children, or the weak. He has a strong relationship with young Gavroche and tries to be a friend to many of the gamins, grisettes, and prostitutes that he meets, wanting to help where he can do so, and harming someone in front of him is the best way to raise his considerable ire.
Most of the time, Courfeyrac can keep his calm and cool, except in cases where someone is harmed, where justice is not carried out, and where he cannot smooth things over in his way. This is the time when he becomes angry and needs to be restrained by friends, but ordinarily, he is kind, bright, and cheerful, and knows and cares about the law far, far more than he lets on. He's the first to look after a sick friend and the last to leave them alone, the first to buy a round of drinks, and one of the last to part from the company of the others. He loves cats, good wines, singing, and throwing his energy into helping and fighting for his people above all else.
[Specialties/Abilities] Courfeyrac is a fairly average, albeit extremely popular, and good looking human, with no specific special abilities. That said, he possesses certain skills that come from being something of a dandy within his home environment, and some aspects of his personality can be considered as skills for him.
Courfeyrac has a strong eye for fashion and not only dresses well, but helps others to do the same. He is very skilled in the art of cravat wearing, and, like a certain Beau Brummel, has been known to spend entire mornings dressing while instructing certain friends in the art of it. His flare for fashion extends as far as finding ways to gift his friends with items of clothing if he sees someone who he thinks truly needs something, and he has some extremely crafty ways of going about this business.
One of Courfeyrac's other skills is his ability to mediate in arguments and to smooth things over. While he frequently has his own moments where emotions seem to get the best of him, or maybe because of this, he is able to step into arguments between his friends and mediate disputes as much as possible, mostly by falling back on humor as a means of distraction for them. He is very good at making people feel better about problems in their lives, and tends to take his job of being a good friend very seriously, often going to extremes to take care of his friends, and seems to have an instinct for how to do it. He is also very skilled in charming people, especially women, and he definitely knows how to work that.
Lastly, and more physically, Courfeyrac is a very skilled, and fast, fencer. He has been trained in the art since he was young, and loves the frenzy of movement and instinct that take over him when he has a foil in hand. He excels at the sport, and can be particularly dazzling against an opponent, becoming a distracting whirlwind. While he may not be able to hold his own against other weapons, he is definitely a good duelist and puts a lot of effort into his sport.
He can also shoot, has a pleasant tenor, is quick on his feet, and has amazing hair.
[Affection] Courfeyac is very affectionate. He'll accept all kinds of attention from anyone at all, and sexual attention from those who he's consented to have sex with/who consent to have it with him.
He would prefer not to be groped by strangers or anything, but he's fine with touches, hugs, etc, even if he doesn't know you. He's probably likely to try to kiss friends in public, unless they're a friend who doesn't like that sort of thing. Otherwise? If you're a friend, you're likely to get greeted with a kiss on the cheek and a huge hug. He also has very little understanding of personal space and is likely to flop out on top of you, put his head in your lap, etc. You're welcome to do the same to him.
If he bothers you in this, please let him know and he'll stop right away. He doesn't want to make people uncomfortable and wouldn't be offended. He is mostly likely to seek attention and affection of all sorts and sometimes does it subconsciously, and will need to be reminded that some people don't appreciate that sort of thing unawares or at all.
[Fighting] Other characters can certainly fight with and hurt Courfeyrac. He's likely to be annoyed if you leave bruises on his face or do anything along those lines, and can be quite whiny. He's also a very strong fencer, but not so good at close fighting or anything involving force over speed and specialized skills.
[Other Permissions] Telepathy is fine, as is fourth wall breaking. He would be a bit shocked to learn about the novel and musical but he'd also want to check it out if he knew about it, so that's definitely cool!
[Other Facts] I think that about covers it!
